Committee meeting on 13yr olds murder classified

Malé, Maldives – Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender has classified the meeting held today regarding the kidnapping and murder of a 13-year-old boy in Malé City on June 22, 2021.

While the committee had summoned officials from the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and Maldives Police Services, it was revealed that the committee meeting was classified on the request of both authorities.

According to Maldives Police Service, following a 48-hour search, the body of the 13 year old was located at approximately 0238 hours on June 22, 2021. The body was found inside a box which had been thrown in the lagoon of Hulhumalé Phase 2.

Police also stated that two arrests were made in connection to the murder and kidnapping. At present, the suspects are another minor aged 17 and an adult aged 27. 

The suspects are charged with 4 criminal offences including sexual abuse on a minor. Other charges include murder and rape. The adult suspect is remanded to remand until the end of trial while the juvenile is remanded for 15 days by the Criminal Court of Maldives.
