President ratifies bills to assign official residences for Speaker & Chief Justice

Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today ratified the first amendment to the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act (Act no: 5/2013) and the sixth amendment to the Judges Act of Maldives (Act no: 13/2010).

The amendments brought to the Powers Act and Judges Act of Maldives specify that the Speaker of the Parliament and Chief Justice with their families be provided with official residences.

The amendments to acts further stipulate several improvements to the security and safety of the Speaker and their family, including around-the-clock security services from the Maldives National Defense Force(MNDF).

The Maldives Parliament passed the amendments to both bills on June 21, 2021, at the 14th sitting of the second session of the Parliament this year. Upon ratification, the amendment has now been published in the Government Gazette.
