Malé, Maldives – The May 6 Committee investigating into the terror attack against Former President of Maldives and Current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, revealed that MP of Hulhudhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb received intel from a friend, that a terror attack was being planned again the speaker with a funding of USD 3 million.
Speaking at Thursday night’s MDP National Steering Committee meeting, Chairperson of May 6 Committee and MP of Villifushi Constituency Hassan Afeef shared the progress of the committee so far.
MP Afeef said that a friend of MP Ilyas met him on May 3rd and shared vital information that an attack was being planned against the Speaker, with a funding of USD 3 million. He added that, the advance payment for the task was ongoing at the time. MP Afeef also said that the one who gave the information revealed that the task was assigned to extremists after careful planning.
In addition to this, MP Afeef said that Ilyas shared the information with Speaker Nasheed the next day, following which a request was made for the information to be shared with the Defence Ministry. MP Ilyas called Defence Minister Maria Didi who did not pick up the first time. So MP Ilyas contacted her again the next day.
Afeef said that Minister Maria responded to the information, saying that Nasheed’s security is of top level and that he is secure.
Speaker Nasheed currently remains in Germany after he was released from the German medical hospital on May 21, where he went for recovery and rehabilitation for the injuries suffered on May 6, 2021. However, his family recently informed that the Speaker will be travelling to UK today, for further treatment.
The IED explosion went off around 20:20 on 6 May leaving Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed critically injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to the Speaker, 3 more people were also been reported to be injured from the explosion including the Speaker’s bodyguards and bystanders.
Nasheed was taken to ADK with heavy bleeding and both internal and external shrapnel injuries. Ball bearings were found in Nasheed’s chest, near the heart. Injuries caused by these projectiles caused life threatening damage to the chest area. Nasheed endured major injury to the fourth rib, with a blade going through a lung. A projectile also went through his intestine with another near his liver.
Speaker Nasheed was treated at the Critical Care Unit of ADK hospital in Malé until he was airlifted to Germany on May 13, 2021, for recovery and rehabilitation. Parliament had previously revealed that Speaker Nasheed’s medical expenses in Germany are being covered by Honorary Consul of Maldives in Germany, Christian Von Stetten.
8 people have been arrested in relation the terror attack so far, all of them indicating radicalisation. Maldives Police Service, Parliamentary 241 Committee and the MDP May 6 Committee as well as other authorities are currently investigating into the case.
