Malé, Maldives – MP of Villifushi Constituency Hassan Afeef said that Maldives does not want to become a province of Afghanistan.

The statement from MP Hassan Afeef comes at last night’s MDP Steering Committee meeting following the terror attack against Former President and Current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, 2021.

MP Afeef said that a bombing taking place on one of the most crowded roads of Malé, Majeedhee Magu is not a normal thing and that they cannot consider this attack as just an attack against Speaker Nasheed.

Further speaking, MP Afeef described the attack as an attack against the Maldivian citizens while noting that we have come to the situation where it is not possible when another such attack will take place on Majeedhee Magu or any other road of Malé resulting in injuries to many locals and even loss of lives.

I do not want this country to become like Kandahar province of Afghanistan. No Maldivian citizen would want such actions to take place in Maldives.

In addition to this, MP Afeef said that even though there are differential mindsets, everyone must be able to communicate with one another and that Maldives reached this situation due to irresponsibility in dealing with some tasks.

He noted that the investigative authorities have not been able to get to the bottom of several deaths on the roads of Malé including that of former MP of Ungoofaaru Constituency Dr. Afrashim Ali.

MP Afeef also said that the attack against Former President Mohamed Nasheed was aimed at the whole nation, their citizens and MDP and that they cannot remain calm until real culprits behind the attack, the motive and the funders of the attack have been found.
