Malé, Maldives – Former President and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he is willing to work with even former President of Opposition PPM Party, Yameen Abdul Gayyoom to fulfill his dreams of becoming the Prime Minister of Maldives.

Speaking virtually at the “Ask Speaker” programme while in England for medical treatment, Speaker also Nasheed expressed his confidence in the opposition leaders, saying that they will support him in changing the system of Maldives to a Parliamentary System in the near future.

In his statement, Speaker Nasheed further emphasized that Former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom also supported a parliamentary system in the past and that he has not yet expressed his disapproval for such a system.

I anticipate former President Yameen would work with me in bringing a Parliamentary System to Maldives.

Speaker Nasheed expressed hope that when a yes or no vote is taken on changing the system of Maldives, he hopes for MDP and Opposition party, PPM to work hand in hand to change the system to a Parliamentary System.

A yes or no vote was also taken back in 2007 to change the system of Maldives. While all members of MDP supported for a Parliamentary System, then ruling party DRP of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom supported for a Presidential System instead.

At the “Ask Speaker” programme, Speaker Nasheed expressed his opinion, that he does not believe there will be a presidential election in 2023 and that the government system will change to a Parliamentary System before that, and the government will be made within the parliament. He added that he will request for his name to be included when the parliament appoints the prime minister.

I believe that Maldives will run more efficiently in a Parliament System. Having a parliament that is answerable to the citizens alongside a prime minister to run the the government will be the most advantageous for the citizens, and will boost up the rate of development.

Although Speaker Nasheed expresses hope for the opposition party to support him in changing the system of the Maldives, opposition PPM party had earlier mentioned that they support for a Presidential System instead and noted that this is not the time to change the system of the country.

At the program, Speaker Nasheed also expressed his intention to participate in the MDP primary for the 2023 presidential election, if there is one. He is hopeful that the system of Maldives will change before the next election in 2023 and publicly announced that he aims to be the new Prime Minister of Maldives as well.
