Foreign Minister Shahid departs to Delhi on official trip as UNGA President-elect

Malé, Maldives – Foreign Minister of Maldives and President-elect of 76th United Nations General Assembly Abdullah Shahid on Wednesday, has departed on an official trip to Delhi.

Minister Shahid tweeted announcing that he is departing to Delhi on an official visit as the President-elect of the United Nations General Assembly on the invitation of the Indian government.

Minister Shahid added that he is looking forward to calling on the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid won the Presidency of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly with 143 votes on June 7th.

Minister Shahid won the election after competing against Zalmai Rassoul, Afghanistan’s former foreign minister and current permanent representative to the UN who got only 48 votes in the election. While Minister Shahid won against the Afghan candidate, he is also the first Maldivian who will be the President of the UN General Assembly.
