Malé, Maldives – MP for Henveyru Constituency, Hussain Shaheem (Andhun) has denied allegations of having a hand in organizing a protest against China held in front of the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives yesterday.

A group of youths held a protest in front of the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives this afternoon condemning the alleged actions against Muslims in China by their government yesterday. The youths also raised their concerns about the Maldivian government’s debt to China in their posters citing China as “Loan Sharks”. The posters they used also had “ChinaOut” written on them.

MP Hussain said this regarding rumours circulating, alleging the parliamentarian of funding the protest. Some of the protestors have told local news media that the protest was funded by a powerful political entity. Some rumours allege that this person is MDP President Mohamed Nasheed.

No. No. No. [I have] not talked to anyone [regarding the protest]. These are rumours created by some people.

Maldives Police Service had later cordoned off the road following reports of protests. Today’s protest against China comes while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had said that he looks forward to reinvigorating Maldives-Sino relations following his phone call with President Xi on July 16, 2021.
