Islamic Ministry bans minors from leading congregational prayers

Malé, Maldives – The Islamic Ministry on Wednesday, has banned minors to lead congregational prayers, even if it is for educational purposes.

Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir said giving information to local media Adhadhu, that the ministry has been alerted over reports of minors performing congregational prayers in Hulhumalé “Sahara Mosque”.

Minister Ahmed Zahir said that they questioned the relevant authorities as to why minors were allowed to perform congregational prayers, to which they answered that the minors were doing a course and that it was part of their education. The minister added that they are further investigating into the case.

In addition to this, Minister said that they have now informed that minors are not allowed to lead congregational prayers and that the Ministry will be sending out a circular to all the islands after Eid holidays, to ensure such problems do not reoccur.

According to current regulations, an individual must have obtained a certain certification and get approval from the Islamic Ministry before they are allowed to lead congregational prayers.
