Male’, Maldives – Vice President Faisal Naseem, on Sunday, visited several sites in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll, intended for developmental projects.
The Vice President’s visit focused on sites that were undertaken by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), including the Thilafushi Island Phase 2 land reclamation area and the chemical warehouse operated by HDC.
According to the President’s Office, the chemical warehouse consists of 34 units leased to private parties.
The HDC’s 127-hectare Phase 2 Thilafushi land reclamation project is subcontracted to MTCC.
VP Faisal also visited the Maldives Transport Contracting Company’s (MTCC) premises and a dockyard operated whilst on Thilafushi Island.
Thilafushi is most well known as being the “rubbish island” of the Maldives. However, it is also home to many warehouses and dockyards owned and operated by public entities as well as private companies.
Regarding the garbage disposal and accumulation on the island, the current administration is yet to implement a long-term solution, despite its electoral pledges to do so.
It is also yet to halt the burning of waste on the island, and to put into action more such sustainable waste management efforts well in line with the countrys’ international eco-centric stance.
