Malé, Maldives – The Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim today said that K. Kudagiri island will be developed as a picnic island and open for the public within the next six to 8 months.
Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony between MTCC and Planning Ministry, Azim also said that the groundwork will commence this month and people will be able to visit Kudagiri for picnics within the next 6 to 8 months.
Azim stated that the project worth MVR 41 million is a priority by the incumbent government and stressed that Kudagiri island is much larger than the Kudabandos island preferred by capital city residents as their picnic spot.
While some locals conveyed their dismay at the choice of Kudagiri as the option chosen for the picnic island stating that locals have to settle for artificial beaches and islands, others are concerned about the environmental impact of the land reclamation involved in the project.
In addition, anti-corruption agency Transparency Maldives questioned the government’s sincerity towards public consultation as the project was opened for public opinion yesterday and contracted to MTCC today.
