Prisoner dies at Hulhumalé Jail; Parliament monitors case

Malé, Maldives – Mohamed Aslam (40) passed away at the Hulhumalé Jail last night at 20:23. Following this, an emergency motion was submitted to the Parliament today.

Mohamed Aslam, Janavareege, GDh. Vaadhoo was taken to the hospital after he collapsed in the yard at 18:00 on Monday. He was declared dead at 20:23. Aslam passed away while serving a prison three year prison sentence related to a drug case.

While Maldives Correctional Services say that the case was immediately brought to the attention of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the Maldives Police Service, the Aslam’s family suspect foul play.

The family state that the Correctional Services at the hospital were not cooperative and Aslam was found dead after the family forcefully entered the hospital room where he was allegedly being treated.

The MP for Maduvvari constituency Adam Shareef submitted an emergency motion to the Maldives Parliament regarding this, requesting the case to be investigated by an independent body.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and MP for Henveyru Hulhangu constituency Hassan Latheef stated that the matter is being closely monitored by the Human Rights Committee of the parliament together with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.

He said that MDP takes this case very seriously and will not rest until a thorough investigation is conducted.
