Economic Minister to approve minimum wage next week

Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Ministers of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail Fayyaz Ismail has said that the minimum wage will be approved next week without any changes to the figures proposed by the Wage Advisory Board.

Speaking to local news Dhauru the Minister Fayyaz said that the Ministry will officially announce the minimum wages by next week after examining the legal details of the announcement. Minimum wages for Maldivians will go into effect starting 1 January 2022.

Economic Minister Fayyaz said that the Wage Advisory Board had proposed the figures after extensive research. Adding that the proposed wages will not overburden small businesses resulting in layoffs while protecting the rights of the employees.

Addressing the issue of establishing minimum wage for foreign workers, Minister Fayyaz said that a moratorium must be declared until the economy is recovered to pre Covid-19 status.

The declaration of a minimum wage is a presidential pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, with the President instituting the Salary & Wage Advisory Board on 1st May 2019.
