MDP councillor withdraws signature from India Out petition amid Nasheed’s displeasure

Malé, Maldives – Malé Central Machangolhi councillor Ahmed Zameer who signed the “India Out” petition organized by the opposition coalition has withdrawn his signature due to displeasure from the Speaker and MP of the constituency Mohamed Nasheed.

MDP Malé Central Machangolhi constituency released an official statement on Sunday condemning the act of the party representative Zameer. The party group stated that Zameer’s actions indicate support for the opposition, and this act is against MDP’s internal policies. The statement also asserted that the “India Out” petition is an opposition tactic to damage the historic friendship between India and the Maldives.

Explaining his reason for signing the “India Out” petition, Zameer today stated that the public deserves transparency in the Maldives-India relations in order to clear misinformation in the minds of the public.
