Maldives Parliament requests Defence Ministry to disclose the UTF agreement

Malé, Maldives – Speaker of the Maldives Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has confirmed that the a request has been sent to the Defence Ministry by the parliament to obtain a copy of the controversial Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) agreement.

Earlier this year, an alleged draft agreement of the Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) naval base harbour project was leaked by Former Home Minister, Umar Naseer. The government has stated that this was a fake and refused to disclose the agreement to the parliament.

Former Defence Minister and current MP of Maduvvari Constitueny Adam Shareef has repeatedly requested to the parliament to have government share a copy of the actual Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) agreement with the parliament committee on national security services (241 committee).

Addressing the latest request by MP Shareef on 22 September, Speaker Nasheed stated that the UTF agreement is not a secret and today confirmed that a request has been sent.
