The property was previously used by the defunct the Asian Academy of Aeronautics (AAA) until the contract expired on 31 Jule 2021 and the management of Gan International Airport notified AAA to vacate the premises.

On October 14, Island Aviation (IAS) and Maldives National University (MNU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a Flight Training School to form a joint venture company to manage Addu City.

Further, a Czech flying academy has been brought on board for the venture through an open bid, with the Addu flying school expected to resume operations in December 2021.

Students of AAA will be given the opportunity to join the newly founded academy and are expected to complete their course in 2022. The first batch is expected to train 30 students while the following batches would enrol 80 students.
