Malé, Maldives – The High Court of Maldives, today, issued a stay order for the payment of MVR 4.5 million to the family of Bangladeshi 8 year old girl.

On September 1, the Civil Court of Maldives sentenced W Constructions to pay MVR 4.5 million to the family of Bangladeshi 8 year old girl, for her negligent death.

The Civil Court sentence states that W Construction is held responsible through vicarious liabilities and must pay the set amount as compensation to the victim’s family.

W Construction filed an appeal at the High Court and requested a stay order for the settlement payment stating that the company may be unable to retrieve the payment if the High Court rules in favour of W Construction.

The High Court today granted the stay order and stated that until at which point the court issues another directive, no action shall be taken to implement the verdict of the Criminal Court regarding this case.

The deceased child’s parents have also filed an appeal at the High Court since the Civil Court did not grant the full amount of MVR 17.4 million that was initially requested by the family.
