Malé, Maldives – The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has activated security protocols provided by the constitution for former Presidents upon the acquittal of the criminal verdict yesterday.

Former President Yameen was acquitted of the Criminal Court judgement unanimously by three justices bench of the Supreme Court on 30 November 2021.

President Yameen was exempted from security measures by MNDF in November 2019 when the Criminal Court sentenced that he was guilty of laundering USD 1 million of the government through MMPRC by leasing GA. Vodamula.

The law was amended during President’s Yameen’s term stating that the privileges of a President including security will be void upon conviction.

However, the opposition highly criticized the authorities for not activating security measures to immediate effect after the Supreme Court freed President Yameen from the Criminal Court verdict yesterday. The former President was not provided with any protective details from the Supreme Court to his home. Reportedly, MNDF activated security details for the former President some time last night.
