Malé, Maldives – Epidemiologist at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) Dr Ibrahim Afzal on Sunday confirmed that the Omicron variant has been found in multiple atolls including the southernmost Addu City.
Omicron variant has been found in capital city Malé, Addu City, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, L. Gan, L. Isdhoo, L. Mundoo, HDh. Vaikaradhoo, HDh. Nolhuvaram, F. Magoodhoo and K. Thulusdhoo.
Dr Afzal informs that of the 51 of the 100 samples sent abroad for genome sequencing on 11 January 2022 tested positive for the Omicron variant.

Dr Afzal further stated that the current projection shows that daily cases may double or triple to 4,000 or 6,000 cases. The epidemiologist added that while the Omicron strain causes less fatalities, with the escalation of positive cases the death rate is also expected to rise.
