Health Ministry extends state of public health emergency for a 23rd time

Malé, Maldives – The Ministry of Health on Thursday, extended the state of Public Health Emergency declared due to global pandemic COVID-19, for an additional month.

In the directive signed by the Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, he stated that the country is still very much at risk due to Covid-19. With the advisement of the Director General of Public Health Maimoona Abu Bakr the Health Ministry has extended the emergency period until 28 Febuary 2022.

In the directive signed by the Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, he stated that there is still a danger of the virus spreading and advised to continue the steps being taken in order to control the spread of COVID-19 until 1 October 2021.

With this, the Ministry of Health has decided to extend the state of public health emergency till September 1st.

In the past 24 hours, the Maldives has recorded 2,813 new cases of Covid-19 escalating the total number of active cases in the country to 16,673. With the Omicron wave projected to peak presently or in early February, the cases are extremely high. Covid-19 fatalities have also increase with 273 deaths recorded to date.
