Covid-19 spreads rapidly in Maafushi Prison with 153 active cases

Kaafu Atoll, Maldives – Covid-19 cases have escalated to 153 in Maldivian prison located on Maafushi island with 58 positive cases reported in 24 hours.

Maldives Correctional Services release data showing that while there were 95 positive cases in the Maafushi Prison on 28 January 2022, the cases jumped to 153 the next day.

Additional 82 inmates are quarantined with 114 making full recoveries.

Meetings with inmates are brought to a stop while the Covid-19 spread is not under control in the prison. Court hearings and meetings with families and lawyers are to be held virtually in an attempt to curb the spread.
