Officers at Asseyri and Maafushi prisons test positive for Covid-19

Malé, Maldives – Maldives Correctional Services has informed that two officers working at Maafushi and Asseyri prisons have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

Random sampling has been initiated at the two prisons following the positive tests.

The cases at Asseyri prison at K. Himmafushi, and Maafushi prison comes after 13 people tested positive for Covid-19 at Dhoonidhoo prison.

Corrections spokesperson states that samples will be taken from all inmates and officers in the respective prisons to find the extent of spread. Meanwhile, safety measures have been upgraded due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Maldives recorded 253 new cases yesterday. Of which 111 were from the Malé area, while 61 cases were recorded from inhabited islands. The figures also included the 64 new found cases from operational resorts and 17 case from industrial islands which brought up the total active cases in the country to 2,905.

With this, the total number of Covid-19 cases recorded in the country has reached 26,920 out of which 23,935 patients have made full recoveries, as of 18:00 of April 21, 2021.
