Malé, Maldives – Police have arrested two political party activists for creating unrest outside the Komandoo by election polling station located at capital Malé.
The scuffle between two parties, MDP and PPM, occurred as the polls were closing. Local news report that the two groups allegedly exchanged threats.
Police handcuffed two youth for creating unrest.
Earlier this morning PPM supporters protested near the same polling station claiming duplicitous election tactics by MDP.
Polls closed at 16:57 with the last ballot box closing in the capital city Malé.
MDP representative Mohamed Rasheed is leading the race with 809 votes while opposition PPM representative Moosa Fathuhy is trailing behind with 541 votes in the unofficial results. With over 50 percent of the votes counted, new entry MNP’s Abdul Hannan Idris has lost the election.
