Malé, Maldives – Maldivian women’s national table tennis team has qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022.
The Maldivian team qualified for the games which begins on 26th July by being listed among the top 16 team in the Commonwealth region.
Ali Rasheed, President of Table Tennis Association of Maldives (TTAM) said that the initial plan of the Commonwealth Games Federation was to have teams participate in qualifying matches during February and March of 2022. However, given the unstable Covid-19 situation in some countries, the Federation had to qualify the top 16 countries in the region based on ranking.
Our women’s team qualifies among the top 16 countries. That’s how we qualified.
Ali Rasheed, President, TTAM
Rasheed also added that the Association is working on providing training opportunities for the team ahead of the games.
As of late, the women’s table tennis national team has been making huge success in the international arena, including the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games from which all golds in the female table tennis category was secured by team Maldives.
This Commonwealth Games would be the first time Maldives participates in the tournament since it rejoined the Commonwealth in 2020.
