Malé, Maldives – The Petition Committee of the Maldives Parliament has decided to bring in the management of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) regarding a petition submitted by the air traffic controllers at Velana International Airport (VIA).

In March 2022, the airtraffic controllers working at the air traffic control tower at VIA unanimously signed a petition regarding the lack of progression and training opportunities for the employees after the Air Traffic Services were split into two units.

At the meeting today, MP for Ihavandhoo Constituency Mohamed Shifau brought the petition to attention stating that the complaints by the controllers pointed to a larger scheme than simple negligence. The committee members agreed to investigate the matter further.

In October 2021, 90 percent of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff working at Velana International Airport signed a petition following three years with no solutions for their concerns.
