Parliament passes the Electronic Transactions Bill

Malé, Maldives – In a significant move, the Parliament of Maldives today passed the Electronic Transactions Bill with 44 votes.

The bill sponsored by MP Abdulla Waheed of Dhidhdhoo constituency legitimizes electronic transactions made both in the Maldives and abroad. Electronic transactions included under the umbrella of this bill includes all data transactions including emails and messages sent via messaging applications.

More importantly, this bill grants legal rights to information transferred electronically and may give legitimacy to electronic signatures.

The bill aimed to provide ease in transactions globally, encompasses banking and other services.
