Aimindhatha is detained unlawfully: Defense Lawyer

Addu City, Maldives – Defence lawyer of detained Aminath Dhiye (Aimindhatha) on Thursday stated that the 59 year old is detained unlawfully and the case have been appealed at the Maldives High Court.

Defence Lawyer Ibrahim Shameel stated this regarding a report by local news Addulive questioning the example set by elected officials after they signed a petition calling for the release of Aimindhatha.

Shameel stated that the detention is unlawful and called out the Police for their lack of action in the 21 days that the suspect has been detained.

It’s not that we don’t have complaints regarding the arrest. We can’t disclose the full information without releasing details of the [child sexual abuse] victim, which is against the law.

Shameel further detailed that the case has been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and Parliament Committee on Human Rights and Gender.

Aimindhatha was arrested in the southern region for the sexual abuse of a 6 year old girl on 25 March 2022 and was remanded to custody till the end of the trial. The arrested has been working as janitorial staff at an Addu City school for 29 years.
