Maldives observes three-day mourning following the passing of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed

Malé, Maldives – The Maldives is observing a three-day mourning with the national flag flown at half-mast from May 14-16, 2022 following the passing of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the late President of the UAE, Emir of Abu Dhabi, and Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The late Sheikh Khalifa passed away on Friday afternoon at 73.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih would on Sunday travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to convey his condolences and sympathies in person to the family of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed.

Foreign Minister Shahid also sent a message of condolences expressing deep sorrow and fondly remembering His Highness’s pioneering vision and innovation that transformed the Emirates towards a global leadership position.

The Federal Supreme Council has elected the late ruler’s younger brother Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the new President of UAE following the passing of Sheikh Khalifa.
