President Solih dismisses Speaker Nasheed’s prediction of not running for 2023 elections

Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday stated that he has not made a decision about the 2023 presidential elections after Speaker Mohamed Nasheed stated that it is unlikely for the President to contest the elections.

The President stated that he has not made the decision against contesting the 2023 presidential elections.

Former President and incumbent Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed stated earlier today that it is possible for new faces to enter the presidential primaries, adding that President Solih will likely not run for president next term.

Speaker Nasheed will run for presidential primaries.

Regarding this, President Solih has stated that he has held no such discussions with Speaker Nasheed.

President Solih confirmed that he has not made a decision against running for the 2023 presidential elections.

President Solih has not made the decision against contesting.

The choice of candidate for the ruling party will be made by MDP members during the party primaries. While it is unclear which candidate will represent MDP, the opposition coalition stands behind leader and recently acquitted former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
