Vaavu Atoll, Maldives – Vaavu Atoll Council reported on Thursday that a 50ft whale carcass is drifting near V. Thinadhoo.
Local news reports that the carcass was first spotted by fishermen earlier today. The issue was brought to the attention of the Vaavu Atoll Council by the police.
While the council intends to catch and use the carcass, the rough monsoon weather is posing to be a challenge.
Dead whale carcasses washing ashore is a rare occurance in the Maldives despite being a coastal island nation with the most recent whale carcass spotted in 2018 ago near capital city Malé and another sighted near B. Atoll in 2017.
