Clemency Board clears 161 cases during first half of 2022

Malé, Maldives – The latest statistics from the Attorney General’s Office reveal that the Clemency Board has concluded 161 cases till June 2022.

A total of 257 cases were submitted to the Clemency Board while the board completed 161 cases. 23 cases were cancelled due to various reasons and 73 cases are still pending.

This is an decrease compared to the 429 cases completed for the same duration in 2021. A total of 234 cases concluded in 2020 and the 159 cases concluded the year before. 

Former President Mohamed Nasheed instituted the Clemency Board in 2010, in accordance with Article 9 of the Clemency Act. The Attorney General heads the board of 11 members.
