Clemency board completes 429 cases so far in 2021!

Malé, Maldives – The latest statistics from the Attorney General’s Office reveal that the Clemency board has concluded 429 cases so far in 2021.

The statistics for 2021 are from 1 January 2021 to 3 June 2021. The Attorney General’s Office revealed that while the board had made a decision on 429 convicts, 23 convicts have been scheduled for review.

This is an increase compared to the 234 cases concluded in 2020 and the 159 cases concluded the year before.

In addition to this, the office noted that there 637 unfinished cases presented to the board at the end of 2020. While the board received 144 additional clemency cases in 2021, there are 429 cases for which the board decided on following the directive of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Furthermore, the 247 cases were dismissed from the board for various reasons as of June 2021. Along with this, there 105 currently unfinished cases presented to the board.

In accordance with Article 9 of the Clemency Act, then President Mohamed Nasheed instituted the Clemency Board in 2010. The Attorney General heads the board as president.
