Malé, Maldives – Over 500 people signed a petition on Sunday to depose Mohamed Nasheed and Eva Abdulla from their positions as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Maldives Parliament following Nasheed’s defence of his brother Ahmed Nazim who is under arrest for alleged same-sex sexual relations.

The petition under the campaign #ImpeachNasheed is gaining momentum with the current goal of getting 1,000 signatures after reaching the initial goal of 100 signatures within hours.

The petition proposal reads that the Former president and current speaker of parliament Mohamed Nasheed has been,

  • continuously mocking the Maldivian people by challenging our social and Islamic values
  • defends immorality and is trying to bring down the whole country

Popular religious scholars Ali Zaid and Mohamed Iyaz have retweeted this petition to remove Nasheed from office.

Meanwhile, MDP is discussing deposing Speaker Nasheed following allegations by Nasheed of politically motivated persecution of his brother and accusations of adultery aimed at President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

MDP PG group has not yet made a decision since the motion was not formally submitted to the office.
