Laamu Atoll, Maldives – A sea vessel carrying 16 passengers from Malé to Addu City has run aground on a reef near Laamu Atoll’s Maamendhoo island.
The cargo vessel named “New Line” ran aground towards the northern area of Maamendhoo reef, sometime early morning today.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has been informed of the incident and are active at the site. It has been reported that the Central Area Coast Guard’s third squadron was alerted to the incident around 03:25 am today.
MNDF has confirmed that there were no injuries in the accident, and that as of 08:15 am of this morning, unloading the cargo aboard has begun with the participation of officers from all components of the MNDF’s Central Area Command.
MNDF stated that efforts to relocate the boat will begin only after clearing out all the cargo from it.
