Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service confirms that the authority is investigating a rape complaint received by the authority concerning the rape of a woman in Malé City.

Following her complaint to the authority, the victim also took to social media exposing her alleged rapist, explaining in detail her account of the attack.

As described by her on Twitter, the attack took place last Friday, during a get together with some of her friends. She stated that after the get together, her partner left to drop off another female friend home, as she stayed back in the Hulhumalé apartment. During this time, she was alone with another male friend, she said.

“He grabbed me by my leg, forcefully carried me and threw me on to the sofa, forcefully removed my clothes off of me while I kept shouting and pushing him away. He removed my undergarments and RAPED ME,” she explained on a Twitter thread.

She then explained that she went on to file the complaint to Police and criticised the authority for the response she received.

“When my boyfriend returned I couldn’t speak a word, I was in a state of shock I didn’t know what to do. All I could do was cry. He took me home and I then explained what happened there. I went to lodge this complaint at the police and they asked me how short my skirt was.”

She also tagged the official Twitter accounts of the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services as well as the account of Maldives Police Service and demanded justice.

It has been reported that the alleged rapist has publicly denied having any part in raping the woman and called on the authorities to investigate the accusations and bring truth to light.

This comes at a time when violence against women and the need to believe victims are heated topics in the Maldives, after a young woman was found brutally murdered in a Malé apartment just days ago.
