Malé, Maldives – Former President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on Friday stated that he was wrong to go against Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail.
I won’t go against Fayyaz anymore … It was a wrong move on my part.

Nasheed stated this referring to the MDP internal election anti-campaigns headed by Nasheed against opposing candidate Fayyaz.
Speaker Nasheed stated in the ruling party’s internal group chat that he was instigated to go against the Economic Minister and incumbent MDP Chairperson Fayyaz by MP Hussain Shaheem of Henveyru South constituency.
This issue arose when MP Shaheem raised concerns after the Speaker appointed Minister Fayyaz’s former campaign manager Ibrahim Waheed as his campaign manager to promote the bid to change the Maldives’ governance system from Presidential to Parliamentary.
While Nasheed admitted wrongdoing in going against Minister Fayyaz, the Speaker also emphasized that he wanted to pursue the parliamentary system change with Fayyaz.
The Speaker has put forward a decree to change to parliamentary governance system for the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) upcoming congress on August 19 – 21, 2022.
