Thilafushi, Maldives – A fire broke out in the waste yard of the industrial waste management island, Thilafushi yesterday.

WAMCO, the company managing waste at the island issued a press release following the incident, detailing that the fire originated from the temporary waste disposal ground.

The statement further cautioned the general public of thick smoke coming from the area lasting for about a week, despite the fire being controlled with the assistance of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

WAMCO also urges any vessels transporting waste to the island to adhere to the regulations set forth concerning the island, and to steer clear of any conduct that may cause a fire.

This is the first fire incident that took place in Thilafushi after incineration of waste was put to a stop in the island in October 2021. Since then, the island’s waste management methodologies have evolved into more contemporary disposal techniques.
