Malé, Maldives – Rescuers are on the look for a young man from Addu City, who went missing after the speedboat he was travelling in capsized.

The missing individual has been identified by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) as Mohamed Minhaj (28) from Hithadhoo, Addu City. He is last reported to have been seen wearing a long sleeved grey tshirt and a blue pair of jeans.

The speedboat Minhaj travelled in, which is reported to have a capacity of 36 passengers and departed from Malé at 13:30 on Thursday, capsized near Ukulhas island of Alifu Alifu atoll with only two passengers.

The second person that travelled with Minhaj is reported to have swam his way onto Feridhoo island near Ukulhas and have asked islanders picnicking on the beach for some food before he was taken to the health center for treatment. The individual has since been transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé for further treatment. His health condition is unknown as of now.

While the nature of the trip is yet to be known, the overturned boat was found by locals yesterday, who tugged the boat into the island’s harbour.

Rescuers have explored a total of 35 nautical miles in search for Minhaj using ships, intercept crafts and a dornier flight.

Any information pertaining to the whereabouts of Minhaj is requested to be relayed to Coast Guard hotline 191 or 3395981 or 3398890.
