2023 presidential election is where we defeat India: Yameen

Malé, Maldives – Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has revealed that the opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the 2023 presidential election is where they end India’s influence over Maldives.

Speaking with local media while visiting PPM’s internal election venue, the former president told that the 2023 elections will be for defeating India and their influence in Maldives, and requested everyone to work towards that goal.

Yameen is also the presidential candidate of the opposition coalition – Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC).

The 2023 elections are ahead. This is the election where we will defeat India by the will of Allah.

He also said the main purpose of the internal elections is to prepare for the upcoming presidential election.

In PPM’s internal elections members are contesting four seats. They are for the positions of constituency presidents, constituency vice-presidents, youth movement island president and women’s movement island president.

Yameen said the PPM’s internal elections were very democratic. He said only one candidate would be elected and asked the unelected candidates to work together. He further added that it was the wish of all of the party’s leadership that nothing disrupts the peace among party members when this election is over.

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s remarks against India comes while he had told local media on September 3, 2022 that they have halted the India-Out campaign for now following the presidential decree by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to stop the India Out campaign after the opposition lead campaign to remove Indian military from the Maldives.

 Yameen has also stated previously that it was vital for all agreements threatening the sovereignty of the country to be voided, referring to several agreements made by the current government with India.
