Worst fire incident in Maldives, 18 foreigners and 13 locals moved to temporary shelter

Malé, Maldives – People displaced by the garage fire in Malé City have been evacuated to temporary shelters.

Authorities have revealed that 10 casualties have been identified so far and search for more additional people believed to be trapped is ongoing.

National Disaster Management Authority said 18 foreigners and 13 locals were brought under the care of them following the fire. While many of them have now moved to their families, the remaining people have been relocated to guest houses.

The garage which caught fire is located at the corner junction of Iskandhar Road and Koarukendi Road in Malé City.

Fire and rescue personnel were on the scene after receiving a call about the fire at 12:30 a.m. The fire was brought under control at 4:34 am, the army said.

The fire broke out in a vehicle repair garage. The first floor of the house is occupied by foreigners. All the deceased so far in the incident are foreigners.
