Malé, Maldives – Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed has criticized members of the parliament for their tardy attendance.

President Nasheed’s concerns rose as there were only 22 members out of the 86 present in today’s session. Members are elected by the people of Maldives, to do a mighty job, with a fat salary awarded each month, Speaker highlighted. “As salary these members are taking MVR 80,000+ each month. Taking these huge salaries and not attending to Majilis is concerning.” Nasheed voiced out his concerns.

President Nasheed has raised these concerns several times after being elected as the speaker in 2019. Participating in the debates and committees is the main reason people elected the members to the Parliament, he mentioned.

JP leader Qasim Ibrahim, MDA leader Siyam are amongst the members with the worst attendance record in the Parliament. Several people have already taken social media to complain against these members, who are not only respected party leaders, but biggest business owners in the country. While not attending the Parliament and doing their job the people elected them to do, taking huge salaries and adding it to the riches is unacceptable for the people of Maldives.
