Opposition calls for investigation into death threat to Shujau

Malé, Maldives – The opposition PNC has called for an investigation into the death threat made to their Vice President and Malé City Council Member Ibrahim Shujau on social media.

The opposition PPM-PNC coalition said in a statement that it was concerned about the death threats received by Shujau in response to a tweet by a Twitter handle called @muzd9. The account’s display name has now been changed to HK.

The opposition also called for protection for Shujau and for action against the person behind the death threat.

The statement also read that it was the responsibility of the government to investigate and take action against those who insult and threaten leading politicians, such cases should be treated as serious cases.

They also stated that MDP and the government are wrong to think that such threats will stop the work against the sentence handed down to opposition leader and former President Abdullah Yameen.
