Malé, Maldives – The opposition coalition will not give the presidential ticket to anyone other than former President Abdullah Yameen, who is serving a jail term, PNC Vice President Mohammed Saeed has said.
In the rally held to mark the end of the conference, called “Hope,” began on the 2nd of this month, Saeed, who is also the Member of Parliament for Maavashu Constituency, said no one deserves the presidential ticket except Yameen.
“The president of this party is President Yameen. No one will get a ticket from this party,” the former Economic Minister said. “Our ticket will go to President Yameen”
The opposition coalition gave Yameen the presidential ticket on August 19 last year without a primary. Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison on December 25 last year, while he was campaigning in different parts of the country.
However, the opposition has been calling for his release, saying he was given a “haram sentence” The opposition coalition is also saying that Yameen will be free and will contest and win the election. Yameen’s legal team says he is likely to be released next month.
Saeed said he was also out in the fight for Yameen’s release. He said he was behind PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdullah (Adhurey) in the effort.
“Abdul Raheem, I will join the call as everyone in our leadership joins. There is no need to give a microphone to anyone,” he said. “Abdul Raheem holds the microphone until President [Yameen] arrives. We are all behind Abdul Raheem, who is currently running the party.”
