On Monday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced his intention to introduce merit scholarships this year.
He made this announcement at the award ceremony for the President’s Scholarship and High Achievers’ Scholarship, which celebrated the outstanding performance of students in the 2022 General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level exams.
The ceremony was held at the Umar Zahir Office Building, and First Lady Fazna Ahmed joined the President.
President Solih explained that the new scholarship programme aims to increase the number of higher education opportunities offered by his administration.
The scholarships will be awarded to students who achieved the highest grades in the required subjects of their chosen field of study but were not eligible for the President’s and High Achievers’ scholarships.
The Ministry of Higher Education will provide further details of the new scholarship programme.
President Solih stressed that his administration provides various scholarships, student loans, and awards to ensure modern education opportunities and promote higher education.
He noted that his administration has offered more higher education opportunities than previous governments, particularly in various professions.
He also highlighted that his administration’s free degree programme has enabled students from low-income families to pursue higher education.
During the ceremony, President Solih awarded the President’s Scholarship to 17 students who achieved the highest results in the GCE Advanced Level examinations, while the First Lady presented scholarship award letters to 18 of the 138 High Achievers’ Scholarship recipients.
