Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed that the 2023 presidential election campaign of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be launched this month.
The MDP Vice-Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed told local media today that the party is scheduled to start its campaign for the presidential election this month. However, he did not give an exact date for the campaign.
The nominations for the September 9 presidential election will be opened on July 23. The Election Commission will officially open the opportunity to campaign on August 10.
The election will be contested by President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih and the Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim. Former President Abdullah Yameen, who is serving an 11-year prison sentence for corruption, has been nominated as the opposition’s presidential candidate.
President Solih was presented with the presidential ticket at a rally held at Kaaniva area last February. The ticket was handed over to President Solih by MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
The President secured his ticket for a second term in office by a huge margin in the MDP primary held on 28th last month. According to the final results, Nasheed received 15,641 votes. That’s 38.90 percent of the vote. President Solih received 24,566 votes. That’s 61.10 percent of the vote.
