Azmiralda becomes first female Acting Chief Justice

Following the retirement of Acting Chief Justice Abdullah Areef, Dr. Azmiralda Zahir becomes the first female Acting Chief Justice of the Maldives.

According to Judicial Service Commission, Abdullah Areef retired due to health reasons and that Azmiralda was the obvious choice for Acting Chief Justice due to her seniority.

The former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Didi, along with Justice Adam Mohamed were suspended from the bench due to an ongoing investigation, who were later removed from office by a vote of the parliament.

Interestingly, while Justice Areef is also being investigated by the judicial watchdog, JSC despite his retirement.
