UPDATE: Police confirm sexual abuse history of pedophile great grandfather

Maldives Police Service have confirmed that the pedophile great grandfather accused of rapid his own great grand daughter has a history of sexually abusing children.

In a statement released by the Police, the incident involving a two year old minor being sexually abused by three individuals of the same family was reported to the authorities at 16:30 of Wednesday.

Police further revealed that the 62 year old paternal grandfather of the child in question is suspected to have sexually abused the child and that the 81 year old great grandfather of the child has a history of abusing children in the past.

The statement also detailed that both parents of the child have criminal backgrounds and that the mother of the child had been transferred to Male’ due to an emergency health situation, due to which the maternal family of the child attempted to take the child into the care of the mother, to which the father of the child refused and did not cooperate.

Upon the filing of the complaint, case workers of the ministry along with officers of the Police reportedly traveled to the island at 19:30 of the same night and transferred the toddler for medical assessments to the regional hospital following initial investigations. The baby was found to have been a victim of sexual abuse and removed from the environment and handed over to a maternal aunt as a temporary measure to ensure the safety of the child.

“As it was found that the aunt of the child would face difficulties in looking after the child on a long term basis, it was found that the most ideal person to have custody of the child is her maternal grandmother, it was decided to hand over the child to the grandmother. Further, as the child was found to be a victim of sexual abuse, the child was taken to Male’ under the supervision of a maternal aunt at 20:30 of 17th January 2020 for further assessments, and was admitted since.” The statement read.

It was also revealed by the Police that an investigative team traveled to the island on Friday morning to collect evidence and question relevant individuals, in order to take necessary legal action and requested for arrest warrants. Upon receiving the warrants during an hour of the afternoon, the police proceeded to arrest the accused who happen to be the grandfather and great grandfather of the child. The father of the child has also been arrested for questioning, stated the press brief.

No further information was revealed other than that Maldives Police Service is working closely with the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services in the investigation.
