300 register requesting to go back to Bangladesh

More than 300 undocumented Bangladeshi workers have registered in the Maldives, requesting to go back to their home country.

Spokesperson for the national Covid-19 task force of Maldives, Mabrouq Azeez announced this on Sunday night, adding that while efforts are being put into arranging transfers, there are some complications in doing so.

He also highlighted the efforts of the government to bring Maldivian nationals stuck in Bangladesh during this time, stating that a flight would need to scheduled between the two countries. Foreign Ministers of both countries are reported to have discussed possibilities with regards to the matter on Sunday night.

Foreign Ministry of Maldives reported that Minister Abdullah Shahid stressed during the discussions between both ministers that the biggest threat would be to undocumented workers, should Covid-19 spread in the Maldives and asked for assistance from Bangladesh in arranging the return of such workers.

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh is said to have agreed to assist in arranging all necessary transfers.
