Canberra, Australia — Australia recorded the highest daily number of infections since the pandemic began on December.
According to the local media, on Wednesday, Australia reported 501 new coronavirus cases making it the recorded number of most daily cases over a day.
The third-largest city, Melbourne of Victoria recorded its most amount of daily confirmed cases with a total of 484 infections.
The state has also recorded two new deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 128.
The previous number of highest daily recorded cases was recorded on March 28 with 480 new cases.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews warned that the new outbreak in the state could worsen and the current lockdown could be extended.
“They will continue to go up and up. And a six-week shutdown will not be for six weeks. It will run for much longer than that,” ABC quoted Andrews.
The residents of the state are barred from entering other provinces unless it is approved by authorities.
With the new infections, the case count in Australia has increased from 12,703 along with 128 deaths. Among these 6,739 cases are from Victoria alone, with 44 deaths.
