Covid-19: Additional 137 confirmed cases and 119 recoveries

Malé, Maldives — HPA confirmed additional 137 positive cases and 119 recoveries in Maldives over the past 24 hours.

HPA disclosed that, between 6pm of August 30, and 6pm of August 31, additional 137 people were confirmed for the virus in Maldives. They are:

  • 96 Maldivians
  • 25 Bangladeshis
  • 09 Indians
  • 02 Sri Lankans
  • 02 Nepalese
  • 01 Filipino
  • 01 Russian
  • 01 Ghanaian

Among the confirmed 137 cases, 129 cases were found from the Greater Male’ area and the remaining 08 were from the atolls of Maldives.

With these 137 cases that were confirmed over the past 24 hours, Maldives now has a total of 7,804 confirmed Covid-19 cases, increased by 2,000 cases within just 15 days. Currently among these cases, there are 2,615 active cases present in the Maldives.

Easing the lock-down measures in the Capital of Maldives, Malé city, has contributed a lot in increasing the number of confirmed cases in Maldives, contributing to over 90% of total cases.

Infact, the health authorities has warned of a wide community spread relating to the increase of the number of cases that are not linked to the existing clusters.

Previously the majority of the confirmed cases were of foreign nationals. However, since the lock-down easement on the capital city Malé, it has contributed a lot in increasing the number of confirmed cases for Maldivian nationals having the majority of the cases as well.

While 137 people tested positive for the virus today, 119 people have completely recovered from the virus over the past 24 hours according to HPA. Along with these 119 recoveries, the recovery cases in Maldives has now reached 5,155. The recovery rate of Maldives has decreased from 86% to 66% since the lock-down easement.

Up to date, 28 people have passed away from Covid-19 in Maldives. The deceased are 22 elderly Maldivian nationals, 5 Bangladeshi nationals and a Filipino national.

Currently there are 1,451 people in the isolation facilities of Maldives and 172 people are hospitalized due to the virus.
