Malé, Maldives — The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure announced that they will be postponing the rent payments for government-leased flats for an additional three months.

Initially, the ministry had decided to give a 6-month rent postponement for the flats in the Greater Male’ area and other islands on March to ease the financial burdens of tenants due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After the initial postponement met its deadline on August 31, 2020, the housing ministry announced that they will be further extending the rent payments for government-lease flats from September until the end of November as they had received multiple requests regarding it.

Although the rent payment is postponed, tenants are required to pay maintenance fees during this three-month period. The ministry further added that the extension will also be added to their lease agreements.

All tenants are required to apply for the extended rent deferment via email at beneficiary@planning.gov.mv. They should advised to submit their National ID copies and lease agreement numbers. The applications will be closing on October 15, 2020, at 1300 hrs.

Due to the impacts of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in Maldives, the government has allowed postponement for rent and lease payments of islands and land leased for tourism and agriculture as well. In addition to this, banks have also announced various loan moratoriums to tenants.
